We would have to either blind or deaf not to be aware of the poverty in our world. Our young people have shown that they are aware - and now, that they’re prepared to do something about it.

I am delighted with the response and hope it will lead to even greater demonstrations that ‘we will not stand for poverty but only for sharing, compassion and love’.

During Friday 17th October - the UN Day for the Eradication of Poverty - the 17000+ people in the schools listed below stood up in assemblies or classrooms to share pledges on behalf of the poor of the world.

This was their contribution to the 50 Days of Global Action organised by the Global Call to Action Against Poverty and the UN Millennium Campaign.  Altogether nearly 117 million people took part in over 8000 events in more than 130 countries.

Many of the schools also sent a letter to the Prime Minister saying what they had done, and asking him to urge other governments to keep their promises to the poor.

Schools Stand Up Against Poverty was created and co-ordinated by Hugh Gibbons, a Schools Volunteer with the Portsmouth team of CAFOD, the official international aid development agency of the Catholic Church in England & Wales.  But any school anywhere was warmly welcomed to join in. You'll see from the list below that they ranged from the Channel Islands to Co Durham, from the very small to the very large. Hugh said:

"Very many thanks to all for this wonderful heartwarming and inspiring response by all concerned.  The whole country can be proud of what these schools stand for – and of the example of caring about others shown by these citizens of the future.”

As well as applauding the thousands of pupils, staff and parents in the schools listed below, you should recognise others in schools, colleges and universities which registered direct - which you can see at the UK events page at StandAgainstPoverty: www.standagainstpoverty.org/en/events/map/3906
Their total is probably 2-3000.  So altogether, nearly 20,000 in UK education stood up against poverty - a great reason to give everyone a pat on the back and to be proud of them too.  Well done.
