Tiptop Tips Noticeboard

Welcome to a page of personal suggestions and personal recommendations from people in and around Bracknell - to share their good experiences with others in search of a bit of help or advice.

If you'd like to have your own recommendations included here (and you can make up or choose your own topics) contact Hugh Gibbons hugh@ahaa.org.uk

What's needed is some details, and your name - which will be published to show the source of recommendation - but not your phone or e-mail.  If there's a website link, that's fine. You can see the sort of idea below.

NB1  We take no responsibility for the accuracy or validity of the opinions here.
Caveat lector!

NB2 We might be able to build a JustOne Tiptop Tips network - a big group of local people who can be e-mailed when someone is looking for a recommendation about something (eg can anyone recommend somewhere to .  If you'd like to go on this sort of list, please let Hugh Gibbons know.  Any such list will be strictly confidential.

A good day out

Castle Combe in Wiltshire - "The prettiest village in England".
And Dee says "the food in Castle House was excellent".
Nearby is the Castle Combe Racing Circuit - which has some jolly interesting cars
and overtaking.  So it's real racing, not like Formula 1.

To get to Castle Combe, go down west down the M4 for a hour. At the Chippenham junction turn south onto the A350 and follow the Castle Combe signs.  You might consider combining it with a trip to Avebury and Silbury Hill, which are on the A4, about 12 miles away.

Avebury & Silbury Hill 10 miles south of M4 in Wiltshire - makes Stonehenge
look like a flat pack from Ikea.  The village is set among a circle of huge standing stones (which you'll allowed to touch).  Europe's largest ancient man-made mound, Silbury Hill
is 10 minutes walk away; and a neololithic barrow just over the road.  There's an excellent museum, and fine cafe.
To get to Avebury, go down the M4 for 45 minutes to Swindon.  Avebury is about 10 miles south - along the road that goes past Wroughton.

A local artist John Weeks in Hanworth - who does beautiful portraits, landscapes, miniatures.  The photo on the left shows one of John's pictures about to find a new home in Mijas on the Costa del Sol.  The picture is of the Thames near Cholsey in Berkshire - where Yvonne & Michael Goodacre (on the right) were married 40 years ago. It made an ideal present when Anne & Hugh Gibbons visited the Goodacres in March 2008.

One of John's recent commissions was a full-length official portrait of the High Sheriff of Berkshire - complete with tights, knee-length britches, and stock. (En route for B&Q, maybe?)
