Just1's creator and Conductor Hugh Gibbons says...

The Dalai Lama put it well: if you think one person can't make a difference, you've never shared a bedroom with a mosquito.

If you warm to the idea of a unique, unstuffy, and sideways-thinking organisation (of one person) helping promote social justice in the world, you'll like Just1.

Lots of people do - especially teachers in many UK schools. As you'll see below, this year schools have three free-to-all Just1 ideas (in which other communities can join, of course):

  • Schools Stand Up Against Poverty

  • Schools Spring Up: Acclaim Campaigners

  • Schools Weigh Up Your MP

Just1 is just me, encouraging and co-ordinating the help of a surprising diversity of others, and using e-mail to save costs and carbon. It's voluntary and amateur. (As the saying goes: professionals built The Titanic - amateurs built The Ark.) With no committees, no minutes, no blogs. Just1 remains non-political, non-fundraising, not-for-profit, operating on miniscule funding (ie a few quid from my personal pocket). Not everything needs big funds to work.

Just1 is my late-in-life and independent way of applying some useful career experience and skills; lending a hand to campaigns against worldwide poverty; being of some local use as well. And saying thank-you in unusual ways.

I created Just1 to help MakePovertyHistory - in my role as a schools and media volunteer with CAFOD Portsmouth.  CAFOD is the official relief and development agency of the Catholic Church in England & Wales. But with Just1 I can be of help far more widely in the UK - and for many different communities.

NB Just1 activities are NOT about fundraising and not a campaign - though I aim to give support and encouragement to campaigners for social justice.

In 2009, the big event was the Schools StandUp Against Poverty on 16-18 October - in which using mostly e-mail I got over 100,000 souls to take part in schools, churches and other settings. The list makes uplifting reading, especially the outreach activities of the 30,000 in schools signing up in the last 3 weeks.

So for 2010, I've decided my main effort is to provide a simple helping hand to PSHCE/RE in UK schools and colleges.  There are three activities to unite tens or hundreds of thousands of pupils and staff - usually for a few minutes in assembly or classroom.

It's to let as many as possible join in. Hence this new mark of encouragement that you'll see around.

The Just1 mission statements?

"Die of service, not of rust"
a life-long line in the old school song
at King Edward's Birmingham.

"Aspire not to have more
but to be more"

from Archbishop Oscar Romero
(whose memory and legacy
we'll be honouring during Spring Up on 24 March, incidentally).

"Quant Je Puis"
from a visit to Stonyhurst College - which I take to mean
do the best you can
(and I add, while you can
because old age will get you
soon enough...)

If you see Just1 page links
have a reference to
www.ahaa.org.uk,
that's because Ahaa! was a formative influence.

It was founded by Hugh Gibbons in 1994 as a psychology association for non-psychologists -  anyone in any job wanting to get a handle on what makes organisations and individuals tick.  So Ahaa! was a good place for people to chat over the back fence, as it were.

Over 150 meetings were hosted by such places as New Scotland Yard, RAF stations, The National Theatre, hotels, multinational companies big and small, the famous Manzi's, a Benedictine abbey...
