The Conductor of Just1 StandUps, Hugh Gibbons says

A huge welcome to a little idea in which you can play a much-valued part
It's one that's simple, unfussy, no-cost, brief, free and uplifting - whether you're in a school, church or other community that has an ethos and history of outreach to those in need across the world.

It's not an onerous or complex activity. You just need to plan a couple of minutes as a little add-on to your ordinary activities anytime on 16-18 October.

You simply stand up and speak out against poverty by sharing some common values - the Promises to the Poor - read out loud by one person or everybody there
All that's needed is the piece of paper with the Promises to the Poor (which you can download and print out.) In a StandUp Diocese, all schools and parishes may also get this from their bishop in the form of a pastoral postcard near the time.

So it's an ideal outreaching for wherever you usually gather in school assembly and classroom; Mass, Matins, chapel, mosque, temple; workplace and home.

Just1 StandUps are not a campaign - and not a rally. They don't take you out on to the streets for a day. They're just a way in which you can contribute to the worldwide activity - and feel good about joining in such a worthwhile event.

And if you want to do more this website has information on how you can write to government, compose songs, ask other schools, invite members of parliament to join in, or tell the local press and radio the good news about what you stand for. Or you may think of other activities around that time to embellish or build around the StandUp idea or Promises to the Poor.

You'll be standing up with millions of others on those three days.  They're the climax to the 50 Days of Global Action Against Poverty organised each year by the organisations behind MakePovertyHistory.  In 2008, 116 million joined in. The main purpose is to continue to urge governments to take action on behalf the poor of the world - reminding them of the hopes set out in the Millennium Development Goals and elsewhere. You can see who did what and where at the remarkable GCAP/UNMC website www.standagainstpoverty.org.

In these islands, about 60,000 joined in including 17,000 in schools animated by me. Many of these followed through with letters to a surprised Prime Minister - showing him what the good citizens of tomorrow stand up for.

In the UK, the 50 Days' professional campaigning and lobbying opportunities are co-ordinated by BOND - the coalition of over 350 organisations involved with international development. They're complemented by many other concerned groups - such as Micah Challenge - and individuals who arrange their own stand up activities and events. If you want, you can register your event directly at www.standagainstpoverty.org. Their totals are also collated and sent off to Guinness World Records to establish the global figure.

Just1's role is to lend a helping amateur hand to all of this.
Just1 is a simple, small, unfussy and completely independent organisation of just one: me, with a minute budget but a big helping of experience, skills and enthusiasm. What I can do is provide this website, try to raise awareness, and gather in and collate the numbers of those who want to stand up and be counted - as a much-valued contribution to a wonderful worldwide event.

The aims of Hugh's
Just1 StandUps 2009

A little different?

To provide anyone in the UK and Ireland with a simple, easy and imaginative event to show solidarity with the poor of the world – by offering a set of Promises to the Poor to share in gatherings large and small as a contribution to the annual 50 Days of Global Action Against Poverty.

To provide the UK and Irish governments with good news of the strength of humanitarian values and concern of their present and future citizens about the poor of the world – by offering reports of values shown Just1 StandUp events, and by inviting local and national politicians to take part.

To provide UK and Irish NGOs and other professional campaigners with general background support for specific humanitarian campaigns – by staging complementary activities and offbeat ways of addressing their key audiences.

To provide teaching staff in UK and Irish schools with a useful extra element to their PHSE, RE and good citizenship education – by offering some suggested activities for pupils, classroom and other staff, parents, governors, alumni and education administrators, and SACRE members.

To provide leaders of faith gatherings and other groups with a simple opportunity to set good examples of ecumenism – by offering a common and co-ordinated set of activities, Promises to the Poor, and voices to governments.

To provide local, national and other media with a stream of good news stories – by offering a range of news releases from schools and elsewhere
