![]() St Andup says Portsmouth Diocese is the spiritual home of Just1 StandUps - and the first StandUp Diocese It was here that in September 2008 Hugh Gibbons, a CAFOD Portsmouth Schools & Media Volunteer, armed himself with a mailing list of all schools, some good humour, and a personal budget of £50. He wrote letters to Head Teachers and PSHE/RE Co-ordinators, inviting them to take part in the StandUp on Friday 17th October. And he then took the message far and wide by e-mail. With some e-mail nudging - and the Bishop's support - over a third of Portsmouth Diocese schools Diocese took part. Many followed with a letter to the Prime Minister. And the Heads and Schools Governors at the Diocesan Schools Day found it a moving experience +Crispian asked them to stand up and share the pledges with over 17,000 pupils, teachers, parents and others across the country. On 22 March 2009 +Crispian said "Count Us In, Hugh", declaring Portsmouth to be the first StandUp Diocese. |

A StandUp message
from
Rt Rev Crispian Hollis, Bishop of Portsmouth who led over 100 teachers and others in a StandUp at a diocesan education conference on 17 October 2008. "We would have to either blind or deaf not to be aware of the poverty in our world. Our young people have shown that they are aware - and now, that they’re prepared to do something about it. I am delighted with the response and hope it will lead to even greater demonstrations that we will not stand for poverty but only for sharing, compassion and love". +Crispian also served as a cheery OfGod - a spiritual parallel to Ofsted - when push came to e-shove in the final days of gathering participants. For his special support for
StandUps, +Crispian has been awarded a St Andup Helpful Hand Star.
