How your school or college can enrol and be counted in the Just1 StandUps 2009

(And a part for school governors to play)

Being counted in as a Just1 StandUp School is simple, free, and takes just a couple of minutes any time before Friday 16th October 2009. (Though the sooner the better, as Just1 is just one person, with just one brain and two sets of digits for cataloguing entries...)

For the day, you'll just need the Promises to the Poor which you can get at the Downloads page - to share out loud in assembly or classroom.  In some faith schools, you may find that a bishop has sent you these in a special Pastoral Postcard - which will also be going to parishes in the dioceses to echo at the weekend what you're doing on the Friday. Now, just...

  • Nominate someone in the school as the Just1 StandUp E-contact eg Head, PSHE/RE Co-ordinator, School Secretary.  This will only be used for Just1 communications, not shared with anyone else. (If in doubt, give your basic school contact e-mail address shown on the school or other official website.)

  • Guesstimate your School Count - the total number of people who'll stand up on the day (eg pupils, teaching and other staff, parents at home, governors etc)  To the nearest 50 is fine!

  • Gather the basic information on the school

    • School name and address, and type if this isn't obvious (eg Catholic secondary)

    • If a church school, which diocese or area

    • Any relevant extras eg FairTrade/Eco, linked to or supporting another school overseas

    • Your website

  • E-mail all this information to hughgibbons@just1.org.uk

The school name, location, type, Count and website will be listed on the StandUp Schools webpage on this website - so everyone can see who's taken part.

The Count will be added to all others and sent off to the UN Millennium Campaign/GCAP for forwarding to the Guinness World Records. To see what's happening elsewhere, just to the worldwide Stand Up Against Poverty website.

JustGiving Faith School Governors?

Enrolling and being a StandUp School is entirely free.

But members of school governing bodies and other wellwishers might like to stand up and take a much-appreciated supporting action of their own.

NB It's a suggestion and not a Just1 national curriculum requirement!

The suggestion is for a simple £1 per head collection -  perhaps made at a full governors' meeting, sent directly on-line to one of of the church overseas aid agencies shown below. One governor could do the collection and send it through on-line via JustGiving.  There's no hurry - any time through to early 2010 would be fine.

Hugh Gibbons of Just1 has set up these JustGiving pages, so that you can show the school name and that the donation comes from the governors.

If you have another aid agency to suggest, let Hugh know and a JustGiving page can be prepared.

It'll be a good story to share with all the school, and others - local parishes, for example.  And if we get a lot of schools joining in, this will be good news to take to regional and national media. (For example, if the governing bodies in 10 schools in every Catholic diocese in England & Wales each send in, say, £20, that'll be £4400 - enough to fund 2 teachers for a class of 40 in Brazil for a year.
